Jedi Quest Volume 2: The Trail of the Jedi (27 BBY)
by: Jude Watson
Jude has been doing a good job with this series, far more consistently (through three novels) than he got detailing Qui-Gon’s training of Obi-Wan. Another step forward in the slow development of the team we see in the prequel trilogy.

Outbound Flight (27 BBY)

Written by: Timothy Zahn

It is a testament to the large spanning success that Zahn’s Heir to the Empire trilogy was that a spinoff story of sorts detailing some of the events that led to that status quo is a thrilling concept. The Outbound Flight was mentioned a few times with little details during the Zahn trilogy but what was given was tantalizing. An old Republic mission with a few Jedi Masters going off into the unknown. All we knew was that the mission was a failure and the masters were killed.

“Legacy of Terror”

Legacy of Terror is a decent standalone type episode despite being the epilogue of sorts of the Geonosis re-invasion. It’s attempt is to create a PG horror atmosphere which is a very tricky order. It falls a bit short for me, but that in no way means it’s a failure.

Jedi Apprentice Volume 2: The Dark Rival

A fun if not overly epic tale aimed at younger readers. After the last novel in the series thrust Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon together on the same planet, this is the novel that sees the two become master and padawan.

Fate of the Jedi Volume 3: Abyss

Written by Troy Denning

It amazed me as I sat down after finishing the novel to think that here we are a third of the way done with the series and almost nothing has happened thus far.

And yet, I still find myself wanting to read further to find out what is happening.

But I will also say is that it better start happening soon. As much as I am loving watching the political chess match between Daala and the Jedi, the troubled romance of Jaina Solo and Jag Fel, and Luke and Ben’s search for the cause of Jacen’s descent into the darkside, it’s bound to get old…and in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if some readers were slightly turned off by that fact at this point.

Perhaps I’m just loving the fact that it’s new Star Wars that I haven’t read yet.

Cloak of Deception

Written by: James Luceno

Word of warning. If you didn’t like the political aspect of The Phantom Menace, you most likely will not much like this novel. As I am not one of those people, I find myself enjoying it quite a bit. Set in the days of Chancellor Valorum, the novel concentrates on some of the first steps of Darth Sidious to overthrow the Republic.

Darth Maul: Saboteur

Written by James Luceno

Another shortish story, that was originally an e-book, Saboteur really serves as a prequel to two stories – Luceno’s own Cloak of Deception and Michael Reaves’ Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Introducing Darth Maul to Sidious’ political maneuvering adds a great element of intrigue. Also seeing Maul perform a task of subtlety (at least for him) works well.
