“Kobol’s Last Gleaming” Part 2 of 2
1.13 BSG Kobol2

The season finale had a great set up from part 1 to have a slam bang finish. Does it deliver? Sort of. In some ways it reaches too hard for that slam bang finish, rather than letting the story develop on it’s own.

The main culprit is the speed that serious events take place in.

Adama is furious at Starbuck, but she knows she wouldn’t do this on her own. Adama calls out Roslin who admits her treachery. Adama proceeds to call for her resignation. When she declines, he tells her that he’s terminating her presidency.

What? These two had been such allies, that THIS is important enough for a military coup? Maybe. But so immediately, these two become enemies. It just doesn’t ring true.

But it’s dramatic.

So we have a standoff. So Adama sends Tigh and Apollo over leading a strike force to arrest President Roslin.

Back on Kobol, the crash-landed Raptor reveals a bloodied but mostly alive crew. Baltar is in shock and can’t leave the ship that’s on fire. Luckily for him, his Personal Six is there to help inspire him off the ship before it explodes.
Lt. Crashdown proves himself to be not exactly a worthy leader as Chief Tyrol begins suggesting to Crashdown what they should be doing.

Baltar gets an interesting vision from a Kobol Opera House where he sees the future in a baby cradle.

Could that have something to do with the revelation from Caprica Sharon to Helo that she’s a Cylon, but she’s pregnant? Helo really can’t make this all make sense at this point, but he does stop pointing the gun at her which is a step up.

And it’s more dramatic to see Helo possibly accepting a Cylon.

Starbuck meanwhile makes her way to the Delphi museum where the Arrow is behind housed. She gets confronted by a Six model…but strangely no others. Why?

Dramatic one on one tension.

Adama orders Boomer to take a Raptor with a Cylon transponder to try the plot originally assigned to Starbuck.

She goes with Racetrack to the Cylon vessel, but their missle deployment system fails meaning they have to land and manually release the nuke. They do so and guess what Boomer sees on the ship? A whole lot more of her.

She flees in terror after leaving the nuke and successfully destroys the Basestar.

Back with the fleet the Tigh-led forces stand off with Roslin’s security, when Apollo suddenly and inexplicably changes side and holds a gun on Tigh. Roslin has a change of heart and comes quietly because she doesn’t want any blood shed. Tigh arrests Apollo for treason as well.

Apollo’s turn isn’t necessarily completely out of character…but it IS convenient.

Oh…and dramatic.

But they save the best for last.

Boomer and Racetrack are being congratulated in person by Adama when Boomer finally succumbs to her Cylon programming and shoots Adama twice in the chest.

Now we get treated to the classic slow motion moment as Adama falls in a pool of blood and Boomer is completely confused.

Now some may say, with the sheer amount of blood underneath Adama, or with the cinematography, that this was overdramatic.

It was, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the right choice. Things get exaggerated in the heat of the moment, so it makes sense that a story might as well.

Overall it was a fun tale, and one that at least made some major steps forward in the storyline. There was some definite overreaching throughout and the creators are definitely guilty of trying too hard, but it’s better than too little.
