Can the Obama campaign answer the tough questions?
Joe Biden recently had a satellite interview with Orlando TV station WFTV with anchor Barbara West. She asked questions about Obama’s ties to ACORN, his statements about “spreading the wealth around” and Biden’s own comments about an international crisis within the first 6 months if Obama is elected. Source.
In response to this interview, the Obama campaign had this to say.
“There’s nothing wrong with tough questions, but reporters have the very important job of sharing the truth with the public — not misleading the American people with false information. Senator Biden handled the interview well; however, the anchor was completely unprofessional. Senator Biden’s wife is not running for elected office, and there are many other stations in the Orlando television market that would gladly conduct a respectful and factual interview with her.”
“This cancellation is non-negotiable, and further opportunities for your station to interview with this campaign are unlikely, at best for the duration of the remaining days until the election.”
The problem I have with this is in the response. The reporter only asked the questions, Biden responded. It looked like a live feed as well so there was no editing. How in the world was there anything disrespectful or factually incorrect? Considering that this comes on the heels of the answer to Joe the plumber and the subsequent derogatory comments from both Obama and Biden, it doesn’t seem to matter what the question or answer is, it is whether it is a softball.
I fully expect that this reporter will be investigated publicly mocked as Joe the plumber was.

UPDATE!
An update, it seems that CBS 3 in Philadelphia has been barred from any further interviews with the Obama campaign after an interview much like the one in the above story.
UPDATE#2!
Sadly enough as I predicted, much of the media is going after Barbara West much as they did Joe the Plumber. Instead of asking why Biden could not answer the questions that no other reporters have asked, they go after the person who asked the questions. These questions are based upon what Senators Obama and Biden have said. Is it so wrong to question a candidate for something they have said?
Oh, never mind, this is probably one of the first times that they have had someone in the media ask them something that wasn’t a slow pitch softball question.
Now, I would like to know why the reporters and their families are being investigated by the media. Oh, I left out Joe the plumber who was researched on an Ohio government computer. It turns out that Barbara West’s husband is some kind of republican strategist or consultant who has actually made several campaign contributions this year to republican causes. It also turns out that Barbara West is a… *gasp* republican. So she can’t be a reporter because she is a republican? Maybe this is why Senator Obama hasn’t had any press conferences recently and Senator Biden seems to be tucked away like Dick Cheney.
Notice how it never seemed to be an issue with Andrea Mitchell being married to Allan Greenspan? I suppose it is because she doesn’t bother to ask Obama tough questions. Get over it people. Wake up and realize that Senators Obama and Biden can not, nor will they answer the tough questions or defend the words that they used but they can be trusted to run the country? Give me a break.

Good!
I watched the first interview a few days ago and I was appalled by the reporter’s unprofesionalism (or the stations or whoever the hell wrote those questions) and I think that Biden handled it well. It’s exactly what I would’ve done.
Remember McCain and Palin talking about “Gotcha Questions”? Well, that first interview is the REAL definition of gotcha questions.
That was abismal and in poor taste.
A gotcha question is not one that uses a politician’s own quotes and asks a question about it. The saddest part about this whole election is that it takes local reporters to ask the really tough questions and they are “punished” and investigated for doing so. Is this not a precursor to the way that Obama and Biden will run an administration? Seems like it is over the top authoritarian to me.
