“Bound”

“Bound” is simply a case of trying to do too much and not really care how it gets there. It is a tall order as it tries to fill new viewers in on the complex mythology, while trying to answer and ask new questions as well.

“Safe”

Well it certainly didn’t take long. An episode after the series took a breather, it ramped back up to rollercoaster speed in “Safe”. It starts out typically enough with the prologue detailing what Fringe event our team would be tackling this episode.

“The Dreamscape”

In every series it is impossible to retain a full fledged bullet train speed. There has to be a downturn or a moment to stop and catch your breath a bit. In a series like Fringe, that has begun to be defined more by the overall arc rather than the specific moments, an episode like Dreamscape faces an uphill battle.

“The Equation”

While “The Equation” doesn’t quite match up to it’s predecessor on an overall level, there was something about it I really enjoyed. It’s an episode whose importance you don’t really get until the end of the episode and even then you don’t fully get it until later on in the season.

“In Which We Meet Mr. Jones”

This is the episode. While “The Arrival” was that first step to finding a groove, it is this episode that stands as the moment Fringe found its direction.
In which we meet Mr. Jones, the villain. Although in the episode it is not clearly marked that he will be the villain, his presence is undeniable even as he is behind the walls of a German prison orchestrating everything.

“The Cure”

The Cure is really a mixed bag. It continues the already tired formula –scientist of the week, experimenting, causing death and destruction for our Fringe Team to be called in on so that Walter can recall some twisted experiment he had done for the government way back when. Then he’ll find a cure while Dunham and Peter see a little action.

“Power Hungry”

A minor stepback…or rather just a stagnating episode. After taking some steps to solidify a throughline for the show, Power Hungry was more of the same filler type episode.
As we are still unaware as to who might be the mastermind behind the Pattern, we are left with these week to week villains experimenting on humans.

“The Arrival”

The Arrival is the first big step in a positive direction for the series. We are introduced to “The Observer” whom has actually appeared in each episode but with little fanfare. He is at each Pattern event, or it’s subsequent investigation, always in the background.

“The Ghost Network”

The Ghost Network continues the slow ascent to finding itself, helped mostly by the camaradare of the Bishops and Dunham. Itis very slow though. This week’s Fringe event takes place in two ways. First off a terrorist attack on a bus occurs where the people are frozen like “mosquitos in amber”.

“The Same Old Story”

Having watched the season already and really getting hooked by season’s end it’s great to go back and watch these first episodes again, especially considering it didn’t really hook me for about five or six more episodes really.
They are much better a second time around if only because you can see little things throughout the episode that only truly make sense or have payoffs later on in the season.
