I hadn’t read Tucker Max’s novel at the time of viewing. I have since started before I wrote this review. What works in the film, much like the novel is the unabashed raunch and the unabashed asshole that Tucker is. He’s not in anyway supposed to be sympathetic. It’s the shock value of the story which gives it it’s entertainment.

Before you see this film you must decide one thing. Do you like Tim Burton? If you have never enjoyed a Tim Burton directed piece than you might as well stay home. This is vintage Burton through and through…if a little Disneyfied. In an interesting move that is somewhere between deception and honesty, Burton names the film Alice In Wonderland despite the fact that it is supposedly a sequel of sorts. Alice is grown up now and she returns to a now post-apocalyptic Wond…er…Underland, as the denziens call it. And yet, the sequel does, for the most part, follow the same tale as the original, with the exception of the grown up Alice.

That being said, I don’t feel like it was a complete waste of my time either. It just kind of was. And that goes for nearly every aspect of the film.

A true home run of a film by any stretch of imagination. To make a film so truthful, so genuine, so warm and touching, and then have it be animated? Pixar is truly the best of the best when it comes to animation simply because they know that it is the story and the characters more than it is any flashy cartoons that make a truly good movie.

Avatar

2009

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver

Written and Directed by James Cameron

I have to liken this film to the first time I saw The Empire Strikes Back. That was the first real science fiction film I saw in the theaters and I remember being overwhelmed by the special effects and just generally fell in love with sci-fi/fantasy in general. Avatar, visually, gave me exactly the same effect. Comining the 3D effects with such a brilliantly and vibrantly designed alien world makes for a very engaging cinematic experience.

The story is nothing new and groundbreaking, with the exception of setting in our future possibly. It is an imperialistic culture breaking in on natives who are nowhere near as technologically advanced as we are. A human (paralyzed marine, Jake Scully) inserts himself into the native culture (in this case by placing his mind so to speak in the body of one of the natives) with the intention (and orders) to learn as much as he can in order for the military to be able to drive them out of their homeland, peacefully or otherwise.

You can guess what happens. The man falls in love with one of the population and begins believing in the culture to the point where he’s going to fight for them against overwhelming odds.

Despite the predictabililty of the overall story arc, there is far more than enough to keep the viewer entertained and intrigued in the pure visual side, as well as the specifics of this storyline. Scenes such as the downing of the sacred tree, reminsicent of 9/11, is quite powerful indeed because like Jake, the audience at this point empathizes with the Na’vi.

The characters are fairly strong as well. Neytiri, the daughter of the leaders of the Na’vi, “played” by Zoe Saldana is probably the strongest. Her fierceness is coupled with just enough naivety to be a very truthful character. Scully…eh not as much but I admittedly am not a fan of Worthington. He reminds me too much of Channing Tatum. The big dumb jock who looks good but has little in the way of acting chops.

The supporting roles though, played by Sigourney Weaver and Joel Moore on the human side, and CCH Pounder and Laz Alonso on the Na’vil side are also quite strong.

One thing lacking from the film is in the score. James Horner who has worked with Cameron on both Titanic and Aliens, is not one of my favorite composers. He was when I first heard his scores but then I realized that he goes beyond signatures and tends to plagiarize himself. I never know which soundtrack of his I am listening to.

Overall though what this film is about is the visuals. Most of the time Visual efffects can never be enough to make a film worthy of watching, but in this case I might consider it an exception. Luckily the story is just good enough to support the visuals.

At the end of the day, I don’t see the film being one that creates legions of followers like a Star Wars, Star Trek, or Lord of the Rings, but it is a worthy first step into a new cinematic universe.

Charlie’s Angels

2000

Starring: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, Bill Murray, Sam Rockwell, Crispin Glover, and Tom Green

Written by: Ryan Rowe, Ed Solomon, and John August based on the TV Series written by: Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts

Directed by: McG

Coming out a time where already it seemed that Hollywood was out of ideas and running the gamut on remaking old television shows, this one was was slightly different. It truly knew the idea was silly and so it totally embraced the idea and ran with it. It is phenomenally, over the top stupid. But that’s what makes it so fun.

The cast is great. The three angels really seem to be enjoying themselves throughout and have a great chemistry. Bill Murray likewise seems to be enjoying his role and can make any scene funny.

Sam Rockwell is charismatically evil while Tim Curry is just plain cartoon evil.

The action is top notch fun again, with lots of fights, explosions, and chases, none of which are even remotely believable but it’s Charlie’s Freakin’ Angels.

Directed like one big music video (no surprise considering it’s McG directing), the film is really non-stop, and loud but it is exactly what it purpots to be. In otherwords it’s a fun popcorn summer blockbuster that requires no thinking.

If you are in the mood for that you could do worse than watch Charlie’s Angels.

I sit back and wonder how to review this masterpiece. Everything is there. The casting is perfect, the score by Howard Shore is the most iconic since the John Williams’ canon, the cinematography is beautiful, the adaption is the most pure I’ve ever seen from a novel, and yet the pacing is brisk and three hours later, I was happy to move on to Two Towers just to get more.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Two Towers had quite a task. After hitting it out of the ballpark with the Fellowship of the Ring, how could they possibly follow suit? Especially given that as the middle arc, there is no true beginning, no true end, and the way the book is depicted would be two mini-movies as we follow first the remaining fellowship and their adventures and then the story of the still questing Frodo and Sam in the second portion.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

2003

Starring: Elijah Woods, Ian McKellan, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Christopher Lee, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, John Rhyes-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Sean Bean, Ian Holm, Bernard Hill, David Wenham, Brad Dourif, Karl Urban, Miranda Otto, and Andy Serkis

Jackson and Co. set up to close out what they began. And they do it in style. With a clear ending set in mind, and a better roadmap to work from they are able to raise the bar from Two Towers and while they might not quite reach the heights of perfection that Fellowship of the Ring had, Return of the King could arguably be the more enjoyable.
