Fringe 2.10

In a scenario that is becoming all too familiar with this show, we get to see BIG episodes followed by 3 or 4 filler episodes. And I’m not liking the format. Honestly, I believe I said this before, but I would much rather see the show spread out the mythos type episodes a bit so we can get a little bit per episode rather than this.

“Snakehead”

For an episode that was nothing more than a filler, it does a very apt job at exploring Walter Bishop’s present, rather than the mysterious past we want to see filled in. The concept is quite interesting and possibly unique. The triads are using humans to host a squid like creature and transport them to America. The squids are used to make some kind of drug, but not illicit. Instead it is medication.

“August”

“August” was an episode that as a Fringe fan I was long awaiting. Finally, an episode which delved into the phenomena of the Observer. Or as we discover here, Observers. It was a bit disconcerting though how this all came to be.

“Earthling”

Fringe Event of the Week. Again. BUT there is an interesting spin on things. We get a little more focus on Broyles which is LONG overdue. The story itself is rather pedestrian but it’s the way it is executed is what makes this a succesful episode.

“Dream Logic”

Another self contained installment awaited us this week in Fringe. For the most part, these types of episode still advance the overall story at times and after last week’s very mythology laden episode I figured this week to head back in the other direction.

“Momentum Deferred”

Fringe rewarded viewers for two Fringe Event of the Week bits in a row with an extremely conspiracy laden episode. While that makes me happy to learn more answers so quickly, in truth I’d rather they find a way to balance it a bit better. Take this episode’s knowledge and spread it out over a few episodes.

“Fracture”

Why do I feel like we’re treading water here? Don’t get me wrong…for a filler “Fringe Event of the Week” story it is a winner, but really do we need two such episodes in a row? It’s almost as if they only have so much in store in season two and need to conserve it for sweeps.

“Night of Desirable Objects”

Fringe sinks back into Fringe Event of the weak with episode two. I should have figured that would happen as season premieres tend to be big events and second episodes tend to be the quick breather before we launch into a more full story.

“A New Day in the Old Town”

The first episode of the new season does not start off with quite the bang I thought it might. In fact it was a little slow. Although there was a lot of meat to the bones of the tale. Just enough to be intriguing through the slow portions.
We open with a car crash that is being investigated by FBI agent Amy Jessup that brings Peter and Walter to the forefront as it’s Olivia’s car. The only problem is that there is no Olivia until much later when she suddenly breaks through the already crashed SUV. My personal theory is that this was the “near miss” we saw in the other dimension at the end of last season.
