Picking up right where “Hearts and Minds” left off, the show continues to improve on most levels. From Anna’s manipulation of the media to the evolution of Lisa as a possible fifth columnist to the complications of Hobbes’ character the show has made itself a complete series, hopefully one worthy of renewal.
We open with a homeless man finding Lisa on the streets after Anna has her dumped. Erica is assigned to her case as it is the high profile assault on a V. In a great little sequence and one short swoop, we get to watch Erica discover that Lisa is a V and then also that she is Anna’s daughter. Elizabeth Mitchell’s performance in this is pheneomenal and slightly humorous.
We also get to see Erica vs. Anna which has been developing for so long and it doesn’t disappoint. The two are carefully verbally sparring in an intense dialogue.
Hobbes is framed again, lending credence to the fact that the Vs are scared of him somehow. But also interconnected is the photo of someone else who is being framed. A scientist by the name of Lawrence Parker. Erica and the team figure they have to find him before the FBI and the Vs do. Hobbes does just that but in an interesting aside, does not tell the resistance that he finds Parker’s research which is obviously what led the Vs to him in the first place.
Anna uses Lisa’s “attack” as impetus to announce that the Vs are leaving because they do not feel safe. That leads to outrage and panic by the human public. This forces the government to announce that they will work side by side with the Vs in order to strike at the fifth column – all what Anna planned of course.
The best part about the show now is the loyalty issues on all sides. Lisa is definitely torn between Anna and Tyler (and now a bit towards Erica who is showing her how a mother can/should be treating her daughter). Hobbes is playing all sides. I predict he is still a good guy, but will definitely have more moments of acting on his own for his own benefit. Chad is still playing both sides, but is desperate to have the Vs around for now.
The soliders are about to be born, something the fifth column can’t ignore and at the same time Val’s water just broke. It’s all leading to a climactic season finale.
Hopefully not a series finale!
