“John May”
The mystery is solved. John May lives. John May lives. Who the hell is John May? We got tantalizing hints all along about John May starting the fifth column, and how dangerous he was. We learn that Michael Trucco was cast as John May.
And then we learn that John May is dead afterall. By Ryan’s hand. So the John May living was more of a metaphorical thing? I wasn’t sure how I felt about that honestly. At first I was a bit disappointed after the hyping up, but after I thought on it, I thought it was actually very cool. In an unwinnable war it’s great to have a shadow out there working against Anna.
Beyond that, the episode was great. The show has really found it’s groove and is moving ahead at a very brisk pace but still allowing for a lot of character development.
At heart is the resistance’s attempt to break Georgie out of the mothership. Their best option involves the group trying to find John May’s communications console in Reedsville, so they can contact Joshua on the mothership. This leads to them finding what was left of the May family, namely James, who is John’s step son.
James’ girlfriend is a sleeper V agent, who is revealed by subtle interrogation from Erica. Erica and Kyle take her out revealing her status to James who quickly shows the resistance where his stepfather’s belongings were kept. After a seeker finds them and is destroyed by Erica, the resistance is able to contact Joshua who says he will try to find Georgie.
Meanwhile Anna attempts to win over more people to the Live Aboard program as she “needs these bodies on board the ship”. Chad does some research and comes up with some mysterious connections between all of those who were accepted. Namely that they all had a lot of potential for something but for one reason or another, were never able to realize said potential. Chad gathers his cojones and confronts Anna, trying to wrestle a better bargaining position with the V commander.
I liked the fact that they didn’t turn Chad directly to the resistance as it would have been a waste for a good story. Having Chad walk that in between line for awhile will be the most interesting and dramatic.
Then there’s Georgie who undergoes some intersting V-torture including an insect of some type that crawls under the skin along the nerve endings and eventually gets shown the memories of the V who killed his family watching them die over and over again. And he still refuses to crack and give any more names.
When Joshua finds him, he tells the resistance he can’t hold out long enough for them to rescue him so he’d rather die and be with his family rather than live and crack, so in an emotional scene Georgie lets go while on communications with the resistance.
We learn that Ryan was hand in hand with John back in the day, and that it was John that made Ryan stop to think. John saw that Ryan had been affected by his stay with the humans and it is at John’s funeral where Ryan solidifies his fifth column behavior and meets Valerie.
It’s an emotional sequence and well done.
Meanwhile, Valerie finds Ryan’s hidden safe full of fake passports, currency, a gun, and the real ultrasound. When Ryan comes home the apartment is empty.
All in all, it was a thrill ride full of energy, reveals, and emotions. A classic epsiode.
