“Midnight”

“Midnight” is an episode that doesn’t really do anything wrong, but still at the end left me wondering how much of it was really that worthwhile. It seemed that the whole episode was really all about the last 5 minutes. And admittedly a few good scenes between Walter Bishop and the brilliant but flawed scientist, Nicholas Boone.
One of the main ho-hums about the story is the fact that it is a monster story…and actually again a kind of transformation story. Boone’s wife was dosed and now she needs to feed on spinal fluid. She is more wolflike now than human although she appears human.
Only when she feeds does her fangs come out and her mouth open wide.
The storyline does have it’s ups as Boone has connections with ZFT so it is intriguing to know if we will get any answers by episode end. But generally, it’s a seek and capture mission that Walter can help out with.
The real heart of the story is Walter’s excitment at having a peer and their discussions about reality, souls, and the idea of redemption.
At the end Boone sacrifices his life, by draining too much spinal fluid for the cure, to save his wife but stands by his word to help Dunham with ZFT if she helped his wife.
In a video message he tells her that everything points to the man behind ZFT being one William Bell, the owner and CEO of Massive Dynamic.
So while it certainly isn’t a waste as it lays the cards out on the table at the end, getting there seems a bit redundant.
