Review: The 4400 3.04

“Gone” is a clever episode overall, and a good set up for Part II which I knew even before I saw it would be tough to wrap. But that’s next review. Set up is generally easy, but sometimes difficult to build the proper excitement
We start with RIchard, of course, coming to Shawn’s door first thing in the morning while Isabelle lay in his bed. They don’t tell him and decide to go behind his back for now…especially after Richard just thanked him for being her friend.
Maia then tells Diana that she had a vision in which Diana forgets about her. But that it wasn’t her fault. Diana is a little put off, but puts it out of her head. When Maia goes back in for her coat and doesn’t immediately come back out, Diana goes to see what is happening, when she finds a strange woman talking to Maia.
The woman claims to be her older sister who only now, years after the initial return, has come forth. Diana is no fool though and says she will need some kind of genetic evidence before she ever let her near Maia again. Sarah willingly gives her a sample of blood.
Meanwhile in a partial PR stunt, Shawn is going to attempt a large heal with several ill children with the press standing by. He tells the children that all he wants in return for being healed is that when people ask them how they got better, they tell them that a 4400 healed them.
Just before they begin though a male nurse comes in and throws red paint at Shawn calling him a traitor to his own people.
In what could be a major story in the future, but treated as a minor subplot now, with some prodding from Matthew, Shawn agrees to share the power of the head of the 4400 with Richard as a moral compass so he can have someone he can rely on to advise him. But more importantly Isabelle stands up to Matthew for trying to use her and she attacks him briefly, showing him who’s boss.
Maia is over at a friend’s house playing when Sarah arrives and is able to convince Maia to come with her. Back at NTAC Tom hurries to Diana to tell her that the tests came back and Sarah is not Maia’s sister. Panicking they go to the diaries that tell them how Marco is going to die (which is pretty cool in Marcos book), but very little they can go on until they come to a page where it says that ‘Mommy will come pick me up but I will be gone. I am in a circle with Tyler Downing (a classmate and friend of Maia).’
Diana goes to Tyler’s house to question him but he knows nothing. All they know is the doodle of butterflies in Maia’s diary. While looking at possibilities Diana puts her coffee cup down on a map which leaves a circle.
That must be THE circle.
Ok that’s a bit of a stretch but what can you do.
Meanwhile, Maia is brought to Sarah’s house where she has made up a bedroom to look just like the one Maia had before she was initially abducted. After awhile she gets curious about when she’s going home so she goes into the hallway to call for Sarah. When Sarah doesn’t answer, she tries the hallway door and it’s locked. Confused, Sarah sees another girl come out and then a few more. She explains to Maia that Maia is now a part of Sarah’s “collection”. Suddenly, the door at the end of the hall opens, and the children rush back to their rooms. Maia secretly watches from her slightly open door and sees a man dragging Tyler Downing in.
The kids begin plotting, trying to figure out what everyone can do and perhaps using it to escape. Before they can make do with it, the man comes and takes Lindsey, an older girl, and drags her out the door.
Lindsey returns dazed and confused and when Maia tries to talk to her about it, she has no idea who Maia is. They take Maia upstairs next and they offer her some kind of drink, which she tearfully rejects. Before too long though the lights begin to flutter and the man coallpases.
Meanwhile, while scouring the “circle” Diana sees the butterflies on the gate to a house. They break in but only find a real estate agent.
Maia continues her attempt to escape by running through a door which happens to lead into the room we last saw Alana and Tom in. Sarah finally explains that she is from the future and the 4400 had not been successful so they needed to try again with some of the current 4400 and send them back even further. SHe also explained that she and no one else will remember her even being in the current time frame. Maia doesn’t want to go but she has no choice.
Sarah tells Maia that they calculated wrong and these children were special A flash of light envelops Maia and she disappears.
Suddenly all evidence of her existance in this timeline also vanishes.
All in all a mostly decent set up per se, just some minor stretches and coincidences.
