Review: The 4400 2.13
“Mommy’s Bosses”
Starting off where we left off, Tom and Diana are tracking down the rogue 4400ers that never reported into quarantine and they hate it. They know NTAC is responsible but they don’t have enough to confront the higher ups.
As they return to NTAC they learn that the first of the 4400ers succumbed to the illness overnight. Diana breaks at this point heading to the quarantine where she holds Max at gunpoint to get him to explain everything they had been hiding. He lets loose that he was ordered by Ryland to create the promicin inhibitor which turned out to be causing the sickness in the 4400ers. It was supposed to stop them from developing powers but it didn’t seem to be working all that well anyways as powers had been developing anyways. Diana allows Max to get back to work.
Meanwhile Allison, despite lashing out at Kyle at the end of the episode, comes to Kyle’s house to tell him that Roy was going to take a plea which would give him life in prison only eligble for parole after twenty years.
Kyle makes a decision then and there to turn himself in, not being able to live with seeing another man being punished like that for his crimes.
Secretly Tom and Diana meet with Burkhoff at the 4400 center where Kevin tells them he can develop a cure if he could find one 4400er that wasn’t injected with the inhibitor.
Lily and Isabelle are being set up in a safe house away from the 4400ers and the Center and even Richard by Brian, but Isabelle doesn’t like it. She tells her mom as such by giving her horrifying visions of Brian coming in to seduce her, and then Shawn telling her they were all going to die. Enough was enough and Lily asked Brian to take them back to the safe house.
Unfortunately Max has succumbed to the pressure he’s under and commits suicide in his car, leaving a note for Tom and Diana to locate the Firewall memo.
With help from Marco they determine that while Firewall was probably shredded awhile ago, Ryland had a secretary who might know a bit more so they track her down. She sems ready to talk as soon as they open the door as she knows what they are there for.
As Isabelle returns with Lily, Kevin is excited to see Isabelle as she provides a possible cure for those sick with the disease.
Tom discovers from Ryland that he knows that it was Kyle who killed Collier but that he’s sitting on it, but once Tom starts working against him on something, as he is, Ryland threatens to turn in what he knows. He goes home and tells Kyle to be ready to leave at the drop of a hat and he prepares to call Alana’s friends in Spain, but Kyle says he’s sick of the cover up and he’s going to turn himself in.
In a moment of great performance Joel Gretsch displays the perfect mix of disbelief, pride, and bitterness at Kyle’s choice, making him prominse not to do anything until he returns.
Kevin develops a cure but only has enough for one shot, but if they are smart one shot might be all they need. He gives the cure to Tom and Diana, telling them not to drop it. They then discover from Nina that Ryland has discovered a 4400 safe house and has gone to take it under control. Diana goes to quarantine while Tom goes to stop Ryland.
Once at the house, Tom calls Ryland out on Firewall. Ryland brings up Kyle, but Tom remains undeterred. Ryland stands down.
Diana injects Shawn with the cure and he is then able to cure Maia. With them both, they are able to develop more cure to cure the sick population.
Now the end is just a blur of big events to get us ready for next season.
Kyle confesses to Shawn that he killed Collier. Although very upset at first, Shawn goes to cure Kyle and draws the “presence” out of him. It’s a cool sequence and something certainly happens, but we don’t know what.
Meanwhile Marco and Diana share a drink as a way Diana can thank Marco for all his help. They actually share a kiss and it’s a victory for nerds anywhere.
Ryland is handcuffed and arrested as Nina returns to her job. I really don’t like Ryland as a bad guy and hopefully it’s not the last we see of him as he added a good balance to the show.
Suddenly Isabelle has disappeared from her crib and Lily is frantic. Then we jump to see a tall naked black woman come upon Shawn and saying, “Hi Shawn, I’m Isabelle”. What??!?!? Seems they are gong Elizabeth from V on Isabelle. Sick of the baby, they want the adult. It didn’t work well in V, and I can’t see it working well here.
Finally we see what appears to be Highland Beach where we see a man with long scraggly hair and a long scraggly beard.
It’s the return of Jordan Collier.
Overall it was a good ending, although it seemed to wrap somethings up and act as more of a teaser for season 3 than anything else.
