Review: Flash Gordon 1.21
“Revolution, Part 2″
The climactic finale and final battle. Flash vs. Ming. A season…and now as it turns out a series finale, just as the series was gaining it’s footing. It is understandable why it was cancelled but it doesn’t make it any less unfortunate.
We continue where we left off. Flash has freed his father but only to send him into some kind of seizure after unhooking him from the mainframe. Upon advice from Zarkov, they shock him with an electrical current and it stops the seizure.
The reunion between father and son is well played, not over the top like I feared it would be.
Ming, in desperation, plans to assassinate all Deviates. He is soon informed of Terek’s forces gathering outside the city and Terek sends an envoy asking for his surrender. It forces Ming to grow even more insane and desperate. Bringing back the army from Frigia, Ming plans to hold off his son, sending a holovid back of him executing Terek’s envoy.
Dale and Mrs. Gordon find their way towards the city to find Flash.
Terek launches his attack and Aura is upset about it. She tries to work to save Ming’s life nonetheless. It forces a little more tension between Rankol and Aura. Terek refuses to promise to keep Ming’s alive. Flash and company work their way out while Dale and Mrs. Gordon work her way in.
Baylin leaves the group to join Terek’s army as this is her life’s purpose. Zarkov goes off with to help forage the way out, and he leaves the Imex with Flash.
Azura comes to Ming’s aid as she has been reinstated to leadership of the Zurin. Ming reluctantly agrees to her offer which would include making her his queen. She also gives him a pendant of protection. He mocks her faith, but keeps the pendant at his side.
It’s good to see Ming have allies as it seemed like it would be too easy a victory without her troops.
As Flash rests with his father, Dr. Gordon explains that they can separate the zerylium core from the generator. Baylin and Zarkov find supplies, and Baylin attempts to breach the gate so that Terek’s forces can rush the city. Zarkov returns on his way to find Flash and Dr. Gordon.
Suddenly Dale and Mrs. Gordon find their way to Flash and another happy reunion ensues. Again it is not as overbearing as it could have been.
Aura makes her way back to the citadel disguised as a Patriot Soldier, while Ming, at his worst pulls a gun on the monk, ordering them to tell him his fate. When repeatedly they tell him that the father falls, the son rises, and a world is reborn, he completely loses his composure.
Flash and company make their way to the rift generator but Flash needs to get the key to the generator from Ming. It’s set up nicely as Flash vs. Ming. As Flash and Dale part, they kiss finally…of course we’ve been waiting for that since Joe’s death.
Ming leaves the monks behind and asks for his battle gear as he will not go down without a fight.
Aura makes her way back and confronts Ming hoping to make him surrender but as we know that ain’t going to go over well.
Dale leaves Zarkov and the Gordons behind in order to go help Baylin open the gates for Terek’s army and Terek triumphantly enters the city.
The battle…honestly isobviously and painfully low budget so you have to go with it, but they do a good job with the little they had.
Ming begins to choke the life out of Aura when Flash makes it in and attacks Ming. Flash and Ming duel but Flash can’t kill Ming, so the battle doesn’t end and Ming takes Flash down until Aura pulls her gun, and Ming is captured.
Aura discovers Vestra and it seems that she hasn’t drank enough gray water to be permanently damaged. Flash and Aura part ways and Flash makes his way back to the rift generator where they start the sequence while awaiting Baylin and Dale.
Terek and Aura take over rulership of Mongo even as they disagree over the fate of Ming. Ming is sentenced to death, but the pendant saves him from executionand he vanishes from sight
The heroes open a rift to Earth, ready to set up the generator’s self destruct. Flash sends the Imex home with his parents. Baylin decides to stay on Mongo, despite Flash’s protests, but as they talk, Zurin attack destroying the rift generator and trapping Flash, Zarkov, and Dale on Mongo.
Clearly setting up a season 2 that is not to happen…
Overall, it is as fine an ending that I ever could have dreamed after watching the first half of the season. Yes the climactic finale was certainly rushed due to the need to finish in a certain amount of episodes, and there were faults, overall it was a great finale.
