Review: Heroes 2.04
After four episodes of the second season, it seems as if there are a ton of good ideas, but man is it so slow to develop that it doesn’t know what it’s doing.
Nathan takes steps to take care of himself, by visiting his sons. He tells them that his grandmother was in the hospital and that they should visit. He shaves off his beard and visits his mother. While there, Angela confesses to killing Kaito. Parkman knows she’s lying but he can’t say how.
Convinced of her innocence Matt shows Nathan the defaced photographs of Angela and Kaito. Nathan recognizes the picture it is taken from and gives him the complete photograph of the Company heads. We see Nathan’s parents, Linderman, Bob, Charles Deveaux, Kaito, and Nathan provides Matt with a copy of the complete photograph. The photo shows Daniel Linderman, both of Nathan’s parents (Angela and Arthur),[1] Mohinder Suresh’s boss Bob, Charles Deveaux, Kaito Nakamura, and a few people we don’t know…yet. It isn’t long til we learn one as Matt shockingly points out his father who left him when he was twelve. Nathan on the other hand keeps seeing himself in visions back to when he was burned horribly.
Good points, and one of the best paced efforts, although Nathan’s visions are a little too vague given the supernaturalness of the show.
The Boring twins actually gain a little credence and interconnectedness as they drive with Derek until they nearly drive over a man in the middle of the road.
The man turns out to be Sylar and let’s face it. He can spice up most stories. He tells them he is Gabriel Gray. They really quickly let them know that they are heading towards New York. It’s really a stretch how quickly the fall in together. As they stop off, Derek sees a news paper which calls out the twins for being murderers. Derek sees it and tells Sylar, saying they should ditch them…hey man it’s your car….or at least the car you stole…so go on your own, why tell the guy you just found face down in the road?
Sylar kills Derek and gets Maya to admit who they are by making her emotional. Sylar realizes they have powers and Sylar wants them. A little better, but SLOOOOOW.
Micah tries to fit in with his new family and his selfish wise ass cousin. He uses his powers to get him Wrestlemania. In the meantime we meet Monica Dawson, another of Micah’s cousin who is working her rear off trying to enter a management training program for the burger restaurant she works at. She is turned down due to her family condition which would not allow her to move anywhere in the state on a moment’s notice.
Soon after we learn that Monica has a power as well…what Micah describes a muscle mimicry. She can repeat whatever she sees people do, from creating a flower from a tomato and Rey Mysterio’s 619 wrestling move which she uses on a gangbanger trying to rob her store.
Now this is one of the more unique and possibly entertaining powers, yet it is wasted with Monica who simply doesn’t have a good story. It’s the story of Season 2.
Claire meanwhile has continued her relationship with West despite her father on both counts - not wanting her to date, and being the horn rimmed glasses man that had taken West previously. That’s an interesting idea…Bennet’s previous history coming back to bite him in the ass. West is a cocky kid, but one that is kind of needed to be that in between character of good and evil.
Matt asks Molly to find his father so he can track her down, but when she sees who Parkman’s dad is, she screams and throws the picture down telling Matt that his father is the man giving her nightmares. She begs him not to ask her to find him and runs to her room.
Matt and Mohinder argue over Molly doing just that, with Mohinder not wanting to push her while Matt thinking that his father is the key for everyone. Molly comes out of her room and tells Matt she’ll find his father for him.
And she does…and then she screams and slips into a coma scaring Matt to death.
Overall it’s again not a bad episode…just not a great one. It feels like the first four episodes could have happened in two or maybe even one.
What makes it worse is that Hiro wasn’t even in this episode and Hiro is needed to balance the show out.
