Review: Heroes 1.11

While Six Months Ago was the more popular epsiode, I certainly preferred Fallout.
We open with Claire admitting her special gift and Bennet actually admits that he knew all about it and knew about it even before she did? Hmmm? Interesting train of thought. He tells her that no one must know beyond Zach and Lyle.
Back at the high school, Parkman shows off the skills that should make him a detective. He finds the extra set of footprints and they theorize what could have happened. They don’t believe Peter is Sylar, but he’s certainly their best bet.
In a freaky sequence, Peter confesses everything to Nathan who seems to be the caring brother when he suddenly shifts into Sylar telling him he knows nothing of power before he wakes up in a cold sweat.
DL gets shot in the should but is able to phase when the one heading for his head arrived. He gets Micah and escapes, angering Jessica greatly.
In a scene that is revealing about both characters, Bennet goes to visit Sylar. The two have a great verbal duel and we see Bennet isn’t shaken by much. Bennet needles Sylar for all he’s got, reminding him what he was before his powers and consistently calls him Gabriel until he snaps. As Bennet leaves and talks with Eden, we discover that Bennet is not the top banana afterall. He talks on the phone and then declares that their orders are to keep Sylar alive, something Eden thinks is a severely bad choice. She offers to go in and tell Sylar to blow his brains out.
DL and Micah escaped into the forest where Micah theorizes that police would have warned first. DL is having trouble with his wound.
I really don’t know why, but this storyline still isn’t doing anything for me. I really think as I’ve said before is because the storyline is so detached from the main one.
In a scene which does the opposite and actually connects storylines, Peter is interrogated by Audrey and Parkman. Parkman tries to read Peter’s mind, but due to Peter’s power collecting ability, Peter suddenly can read Parkman’s mind and there is a kind of feedback. Peter hears that the cheerleader is dead, and shouts out that Claire’s dead. Audrey looks at him and says it’s Jackie Wilcox who is dead. They leave Peter, saying he’ll go when they get answers.
Mohinder makes it back to Brooklyn where Eden has left a note welcoming him back. Mohinder takes his list and calls someone important telling him he faxed the list and asks why they haven’t done anything yet. Mohinder quickly decides he’ll have to warn the people himself.
In a scene which helps to cement the good that is in Eden, she goes against Bennet and helps free Isaac, by sneaking a passcard to him.
Hiro and Ando are upset and think they are too late. That the cheerleader is dead, but Ando is able to boos Hiro enough to decide to move on to find Peter and stop the bomb. As they are deciding they get a call from Mr. E-sock. (Isaac)
Hiro truly is the heart of this show.
As Audrey interviews Claire and points out the inconsistencies, such as her blood being found, but her having no wounds to speak of, and of Peter falling a long way without getting hurt, Matt attempts to read their mind, but gets static. Of course we know what that means and sure enough the Haitian is revealed as they walk out of the precinct.
Jessica trips in the forest while trying to find DL and Micah. She lands in front of a pool of water allowing herself to have the Smeagol-Gollum conversation, where Jessica accuses Niki of being too weak, until they hear Micah calling and they run to him.
Bennet and Claire meet with Peter where Bennet intimates that he owes Peter huge for saving his daughter. Bennet, being a man who can work miracles, is a good man to have owe a debt to you. Claire asks her father to leave and Claire discusses their powers further cementing their connection.
In a predictable sequence Jessica goes after DL with a vengeance when she finds him. Micah tries to stop her but she lashes out and hurts him. Once she sees that Micah is hurt, Niki reasserts herself and stops the violence.
Isaac meets with Hiro and Ando as they catch each other up. Hiro is impressed with Isaac’s power just as Isaac is impressed with a future issue of 9th Wonders. Isaac admits his power is limited to when he is high. They discuss Sylar and Hiro admits that they too lost a friend to Sylar. Isaac gets inspired and shows a picture her drew a little while ago. It’s Charlie. Isaac can do it clean.
In a sequence that further explores Bennet’s character or lack thereof, Claire confronts Lyle about it. Lyle though claims to have no idea what she’s talking about and when a confused Claire asks him how he got home, Lyle can’t remember.
DL tells Niki that they can get help for her, but Niki argues that Jessica is too strong for her, and goes off to turn herself into the police. Ahh if only that would end this storyline.
At Matt’s insistence he and Audrey begin to stake out Primatech, knowing that something is up with Bennet. They see Bennet with the Haitian, whom Matt recognizes. He tries to read their mind but there is some interference and Matt’s nose starts bleeding. He only gets one word: Sylar. Now how DOES the Haitian’s power work. I thought it was something he had to activate, as shown back when Nathan was able to fly away from them, but here it is suggested that he is simply a power dampener. So which is it? It’s a little sloppy.
Claire asks Zach to meet her where she discovers that he too has forgotton - everything. He accuses her of pulling some kind of cheerleader prank. Now this one is a bit weirder and more full than Lyle’s mindwipe. Given that he probably organized his friends to vote for Claire, don’t they wonder what happened? It’s not as easy a mindwipe as you might think so again, a bit sloppy, but necessary to the story.
Bennet and Sylar have another meeting, which is pretty pointless to be honest.
Hiro and Ando watch as Isaac tries to use his powers to paint the future. Isaac says he doesn’t think he can do it, and Hiro tells him to concentrate. Isaac closes his eyes. When he reopens them they are glazed over. Hiro and Ando watch in amazement as he begins using his power.
Claire calls on her father to help her understand what is going on. Bennet listens to her and tells her that he’ll be home soon and just to wait. After he hangs up, she sees the Haitian who covers her mouth. In an interesting twist, the Haitian finally speaks. He tells her that he works for her father and that her father wanted him to wipe her mind like he’s done to Lyle, Zach, and her mom countless times, but that it was important that she remember. He doesn’t say why, but he leaves her intact telling her to act like she doesn’t remember anything.
Isaac paints a new painting which leads Hiro to believe he has to find a sword to help him regain control of his powers.
Eden calls Mohinder and confesses partially to Mohinder, telling him she’s not who he thought. She says she will make things right though, first by killing the man who killed Chandra.
Eden goes into Sylar’s room to betray Bennet, when Sylar crashes through the window and is able to resist her advances. Instead of letting Sylar get her power, she turns the gun on herself, killing herself and ruining her brain.
As Nathan picks Peter up, Peter collapses and has an amazingly disturbing dream where all of the heroes are gathered in a seemingly deserted New York City. During the dream we get the reveal that it’s not a bomb in New York at all. It’s Peter — exploding.
It’s a daring change of the entire thought process behind Heroes and sets up the second part of the first season, very well.
It was a focused episode even if there are some inconsistencies and it is well done.
