“White Light”
Review: The 4400 1.06 4400 WhiteLight

“White Light” is a gripping season finale if only for ten minutes. But those ten minutes pack a wallop, finally giving us some of the major answers we’ve been craving without jumping the shark in any fashion. And while the last ten minutes are all you need to see, it doesn’t mean the rest of the episode isn’t worth seeing.

Kyle Baldwin is in the hospital searching for himself in television and books. Unfortunately, someone else is looking for him too. Warren Lytell takes custody of Kyle and brings him to a destination unknown, claiming the government would take care of his health from then on. Linda (Kyle’s mother) protests but doesn’t get anywhere.

Soon after Ryland is lacing into Lytell for taking Kyle, as a precursor because not too long after that Tom comes rushing in and physically assaults Lytell who won’t give up Kyle’s whereabouts. Tom even goes so far as to pull his gun, but Ryland stops him.

Meanwhile the story in Arcadia Estates is that Surprise! Jordan Collier isn’t quite the benefactor he claimed to be. There is something deeper that Collier keeps hidden. Collier is fascinated with Lily’s baby and under the guise of sending her to the best OBGYN who happens to be on his payroll, he gets reports of exactly what is going on with the baby. More reports than even Lily is getting.

The two get suspicious, and Richard uses his security privileges to confirm that after seeing plenty of calls between Dr. Kern and Jordan. He nicely tells Jordan to back off and they hope that’s the end. Later on Jordan comes to Lily and tells her of some skeletons in Richard’s closet including an attack on a woman.

When Lily confronts Richard, he tells her that the woman was lying and being black in that time, a white woman’s yelling was all that was needed to draw real fire on him. He also claims that she was found to be lying, and he was cleared. They realize that indeed for whatever reason Jordan is trying to split them up.

They decide to leave and that is when Jordan shows his true colors trying to physically detain them, but Richard is able to fight them off and leave Arcadia behind. Jordan makes the bold statement to the audience that the baby belongs with him.

After Shawn gets into a fight with Danny over Nikki, Shawn goes to Arcadia Estates and asks if he can stay. Jordan is happy to let him in.

Tom and Diana hack into Lytell’s computer and get Kyle’s location. They then go and break Kyle out. Kyle demands that they take him to Highland Beach, where Shawn first disappeared. In a frenetic sequence, we see Kyle get enveloped in white light, just as before and we see Tom break in to figure out what’s going on. Kyle and Tom freeze to everyone else, but they begin to have a conversation where we learn the swerve that it was not an alien abduction, but instead an abduction from people from the future. Kyle is not Kyle right now…he is the conduit. He explains that Tom has to help the 4400 as they will prevent the disaster that leads to a dying out human race in his time.

Unfortunately Lytell and Ryland have tracked them down by then. Lytell stays true to the character we’re going to hate and shoots Kyle. This shifts them from the future and back into the present. The being inside Kyle dies, yet somehow the real Kyle comes back. It is unclear how he could survive the gunshot to the chest in his body. That threw me for a moment, but overall it’s a good ending to a decent season and it sets up a world of possibilities for Season 3.
