“Becoming”
Review: The 4400 1.04 4400_Becoming

“Becoming is a step back in the right direction. The freak of the week is still evident, but that is alright as it is obviously much more to the background. I expect to see a new 4400er per week. It’s when the new 4400er overwhelms the rest of the episode that it becomes a problem.

In an interesting twist, Becoming involves the first “bad guy” to have been abducted and since returned. Oliver Knox was the Friday Harbour Killer, who had eight victims before disappearing in 1983. Ryland is quick to infer what this could mean in the PR department if it gets out.

And of course it does, Barbara Yates runs stories spurring the already raising suspicion about the returnees. Ryland tries to black ball her into stopping, but she won’t do it. She knows a goldmine when she sees one.

After everything Shawn’s been through, he needs to get out so he drives up to the lake, the site of the return. He’s surprised to see a bunch of returnees had the same thought.

It is here we are introduced to a character who seems like he will play a big role in the series, Jordan Collier. Collier announces he will have a meeting at an indoor structure for all the 4400ers. He’s a self-made millionaire, who’s intentions are unclear. At first glance he appears to be a character who were never going to know the true motives of. He’ll do something evil one moment and then beneficial the next. He’s introduced well, and it is definitely an interesting part of the episode.

Danny is starting to let his worry over losing Nikki to Tom and he decides to tell Tom about what happened with the bully. Danny seems shallow and immature.

Shawn has a flashback to the abduction and remembers that Kyle was the one originally targeted until Shawn interfered. It leads you to wonder what that exactly means…

Back to Knox, we see that although he has alibi’s he is getting people to commit the murders for him. He somehow hypnotizes the people into believing they are the killer and that they have to kill whomever is his target.

At the gathering of the 4400, Lily and Richard meet Collier who offers Richard a job in his foundation for the 4400. I was left with a foreboding for Richard who I believe will not like what he sees eventually.

And they’re going to need help as the names and addresses of the 4400 are leaked on the internet…and Maia tells Diana they won’t be together for very much longer. Maia is one character who has it together.

We end with a “gotcha” moment as Shawn goes to the hospital. Tom walks in and Shawn walks away revealing Kyle…awake.

Overall it is a good episode, if only because there is so much more going on than the freak of the week…and the freak of the week is a good story as well.
